Cotton Kent was born in Abilene, Kansas and grew up in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. He began playing professionally at the age of 14 and by 16 was playing and writing for the Young Moderns a Washington area stage band made up of the best players from the area high schools. Cotton came to Philadelphia, PA and joined “Elizabeth” which later became “Good God”, a jazz-rock fusion band that recorded for Atlantic. He also toured and recorded with Duke Williams and the Extremes on Capricorn Records.

During the ‘70s heyday of the “Philly Sound”, Cotton did extensive studio work for Gamble & Huff, Baker, Harris & Young and many others. He appears on numerous recordings by such artists as the O’Jays, The Spinners, Lou Rawls, MFSB, SalSoul Orchestra, Major Harris, Blue Magic & The Trammps. In the 1980’s he lived in L.A. recording and touring with the Chambers Brothers. Cotton returned to the east coast and nothing but jazz in the mid 90’s. He currently resides in Florida just north of Boca Raton.
